The Chinese New Year is the most important festival for the Chinese Community in Ireland.
A healthy lifestyle will be key to prosperity in 2023, including regular exercise and a healthy diet.
Driving to work and sitting at a computer means many people are inactive during the day. A great way for adults to incorporate exercise into their day is by simply walking. You can do this by using public transport and getting on or off before your usual stop, and by going for a walk during your lunch time.
The National Guidelines on Physical Activity for Ireland recommend the following:
Children and young people (aged 2 –18)
All children and young people should be active, at a moderate to vigorous level, for at least 60 minutes every day. Include muscle strengthening, flexibility and bone-strengthening exercises three times a week.
Adults (aged 18–64)
At least 30 minutes a day of moderate intensity activity, five days a week (or 150 minutes a week).
Older people (aged 65+)
At least 30 minutes a day of moderate intensity activity, five days a week (or 150 minutes a week). Focus on aerobic activity, muscle strengthening and balance.
Children and adults with a disability
Aim to be as active as the disability allows to meet the guideline for your age group.
For the New Year Celebrations make simple swaps for preparing healthy meals:
- Serve a variety of vegetables.
- Eat high fibre carbohydrates like using wholegrain rice.
- Try fish (oily fish like salmon or mackerel, or steamed fish like plaice or hake).
- Use lots of herbs and spices for flavour instead of salt.
- Reduce consumption of sugary foods and drinks. Always make sure that there is a jug of water on the table.
- Choose fresh fruit for dessert.
- Limit alcohol consumption. There is worldwide evidence that alcohol increases the risk of many diseases including mouth head and neck cancer.
Wishing you all Happiness and Joy with Family and Friends!
